East Greenland mountains

East Greenland valleys

Here's a closeup photo of glacial valleys in East Greenland, taken by Flickr user soaringnc. These valleys are on the edge of East Greenland's Geikie Plateau, just north of the Dendritsgletscher. The photo looks north across the clover-shaped valleys, providing an excellent view of the distinctive striated texture of the mountains in this part of East Greenland.

East Greenland nunataks

Flickr user _Baxter_ recently posted this detailed closeup shot of a pair of nunataks in East Greenland. The image looks northeast across the nunataks, which lie about 25km northwest of the head of the Napasorsuaq Fjord in East Greenland. The larger mountain pictured here is about 5km long.

Here's a wider view of the same area, taken by Flickr user koldito about two months earlier. The nunataks in the image above appear in the lower left of this photo.

Sam Ford Fjord, Baffin Island

Here's a pair of photos from Flickr user 42x42 showing Canada's largest island, Baffin Island. The first photo looks north across the Sam Ford Fjord across the Remote Peninsula, which seems quite aptly named.

Gåsegletscher, East Greenland

Flickr user Carlosgg recently posted this image, taken in August 2006, of the upper reaches of the Gåsegletscher in East Greenland. The photo looks north across the glacier, which flows from left to right across the frame, entering the Gåsefjord just out of the frame to the right. The portion of the glacier in the foreground here is about 3 km wide at its widest point.

McKinley County, New Mexico

The next image takes us 60 miles further east, just across the New Mexico border, in McKinley County. The state line runs diagonally through the center of this photo, with New Mexico in the foreground and to the right, and Arizona in the background and to the left. The Black Creek Valley runs through the center of the photo; the town of Tse Bonito, Nevada, lies near the center of the frame, where the road crosses through the gap in the mountain ridge. Just across the border in Arizona, the town of Window Rock lies in the valley just above and to the left of center.

Capulin Volcano, Union County, New Mexico

300 miles further east, in northeastern New Mexico's Union County, we have this dramatic image of the Capulin Volcano, the only "drive-in" volcano in the United States. A road spirals around the volcano and takes visitors to the rim of the volcano, where they can hike down into the 400-foot deep central crater.

Seward County, Kansas

With the next image, we travel another 180 miles east, leaving behind the rugged landscapes of the American west, and bringing us to this view of Seward County in the southwest corner of Kansas. This image looks north across extensive agricultural development, just north of the town of Kismet. The many circular fields in this photo are a characteristic pattern that results from the use of center-pivot irrigation. The smaller circular fields are a half-mile across; the larger ones measure one mile in diameter.

Newtown, Kansas

The final image is about 190 miles further east, showing the city of Newton, Kansas, in Harvey County. Interstate 135 runs through the lower left and upper left of the image; U.S. Route 50 enters the town from the upper right.

South Greenland nunataks

Flickr user skybound posted this series of photos from a flight passing over Greenland and the northeast United States. The first photo looks north over an isolated outcropping of nunataks protruding through the icecap in South Greenland. The icecap stretches north in an unbroken expanse for over 2,000 kilometers from this location.

Moosehead Lake, Maine

Finally, we continue on another 2,400 km southwest to this image of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in the state of Maine. Moosehead contains many islands, including Sugar Island (the large island in the center-right foreground) and Deer Island (the slightly smaller island in the center foreground). Other lakes visible here include Brassua Lake (right-center), Long Pond (beneath the contrail at center), and Indian Pond (left-center). The town of Greenville, Maine, lies at the southern end of the lake, in the lower-left corner of the image.
